Fortunately, several robust emergency fund programs are available to help Suffolk County residents secure the heating oil they need during the challenging 2024-2025 winter season.
HEAP: Your Primary Safety Net for Heating Oil Assistance
The Suffolk County Department of Aging has announced that they have begun processing applications for the 2024-2025 Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) on November 1, 2024. HEAP is a New York State program that helps eligible New York residents heat and cool their homes. This federally funded program serves as the cornerstone of heating assistance for qualifying households throughout Suffolk County.
For the 2024-2025 season, regular HEAP benefits provide up to $900 for oil, kerosene, and propane heating systems, making it particularly valuable for homeowners who rely on Home Heating Oil Suffolk County, NY deliveries. Regular HEAP benefits for homeowners are paid directly to energy providers, and rental subsidiary programs are also available.
The maximum gross monthly income limit for a one-person household is $3,322; the limit increases with household size up to a maximum of $9,952 for a household of 13 people. Eligibility and benefit amounts depend on income, household size, the primary heating source, and the presence of a household member who is under age 6, age 60 or older, or permanently disabled.
Emergency HEAP: When Time is Critical
For households facing immediate heating crises, Emergency HEAP benefits become available starting January 2, 2025. If you are eligible, the Emergency HEAP Benefit can help you heat your home if you are in a heat or heat related emergency. You may be eligible for an Emergency HEAP benefit if your electric or natural gas heat is off or scheduled to be shut-off or you are out of fuel, or you have less than one quarter tank of fuel oil, kerosene or propane.
Effective 1/2/25, there will be two Emergency HEAP benefits and two Emergency Heat Related Utility benefits available to eligible consumers. This means qualifying households can receive multiple emergency interventions throughout the winter season when facing repeated crises.
Project Warmth: Long Island’s Community Safety Net
As Long Island’s only non-governmental, island-wide emergency fuel fund, Project Warmth is a safety net for financially struggling individuals and families who are unable to pay their heating bill. This program provides a one-time grant for fuel and/or fuel-related electricity. Payments are made directly to oil and utility companies on behalf of eligible residents facing heating emergencies.
Over 2,000 households with heating emergencies, including 1,362 children, weren’t left out in the cold last winter because of a $500,000 grant from the National Grid Foundation to support Project Warmth. To be eligible for applying for HEAP from the Office of the Aging, the applicant must be age 60 or older; under the age of 60 and receiving Social Security Disability; or under the age of 60 and receiving Supplemental Security Income Code A.
